Mt
Moriah Lodge #11 was chartered on November 29th, 1864 in Shelton, Mason
County Washington, with 16 founding members. "Because of the difficulty
in traveling distances from home, the Lodge met on or near the Full
Moon". There are 42 Lodges with this name, or variations of it, in the
United States today. The name alludes to the location of King Solomon's
Temple. Mt Moriah Lodge #11 is one of the two "Moon Lodges" remaining
active, as such, in the Grand Jurisdiction of Washington.
At
it 100th anniversary in 1964 there were a total of 254 members but
there was a steady decline in the membership body owing to the deaths
of many of its older members. "The large decline put burdens on the
Lodge to meet the expenses of operating the "Temple". In 1991 the
original building was sold to the Episcopal Church. Removal of the
stained glass windows and other Masonic emblems cost $6,500.00 and the
Lodge moved to the "Temple" in Union City Lodge #27 where it co-shares
the building with the brethren of Union City Lodge #27. |
